Math POTW #19 - My Little Horsey?

Many may deem this question to be "easier" than some of the others. However, this question was selected so that we can focus on providing DETAILED AND THOROUGH EXPLANATIONS, not just the answers. Look to some of your peers for how to best answer these POTW questions.

  1. Happy Family day long weekend! This is how I solved the POTW...
    To start off, I knew this was an area question, so I found the most basic type of area, and made it my benchmark (30x30). This is the area of the entire shape.
    The question asks to find the area of the shape inside the wooden frame, and since the measurements of one wooden frame is provided, all I have to do is find the area of one wooden frame, and multiply it by 4 (30x3= 90x4=360)
    So now I have my main shape area, and the area that gives you the inside frame. If I want to find the inside area, all I have to do is subtract! 900-360= 540!
    So there you have it! The area of the inside frame is 540cm squared (I would have but a tiny 2 in the corner of cm, but I don't think that's possible in a comment...-.-)!

    1. Hey Emily. Question:

      Where did you find 900?

    2. WHOOPS
      Forgot to add 3 to 30...
      Well that was embarrassing....
      Yeah, your answer's right! Props to you XD. I wrote this post close to midnight (I know, it says 8:34 am, but it was really midnight...) So I guess it was a silly mistake :D

    3. THE TRUE ANSWER: 27*27=729 I win. Haha. You don't use the length of the outside of the frame, which is 33, you use te length of the inside. The length of the inside is 33-3-3, which is 27. 27*27=729. I win. Haha.

  2. Hello!

    My sister and I answered this question and got 729cm squared.

    First, we found the area of the shape itself, and got 1089cm squared. (33 x 33 = 1089) *
    Then we found the area of one of the wooden frames (30 x 3 = 90), then multiplied it by 4 (90 x 4 =360), to find out out how much area it takes up, which is 360cm squared.

    To find the value of area inside of the wooden frames, we subtracted the total area (1089cm squared) by the area of the wooden frames (360cm squared), which was 729cm squared.

    - Jonathan and Rachel

    *In case it confuses anyone, we knew the length of the shape, because the wooden frame was 30cm and plus the width (3cm) it would be 33 cm.

    1. Great job!
      I didn't really catch the 30+3=33 part, so my answer was off ;__;
      You can tell I didn't really look at the picture, b/c if I did, I would have seen the extra 3cm XD

  3. The length of one wooden strip is 30, but they overlap 3 centimeter's so it is actually 27 cm per side because it is a square
    27*27=729 cm

  4. 30= the length of the wood
    3= width
    take the width away from the length and you get 27
    27x27=729

  5. 30 x 4 - 3 x 4 = 108
    108 / 4 = 27
    27 x 27 = 729
    The picture is 729 CM SQUARED

  6. Good job everyone. I like seeing students solve it in different ways. Particularly, either by finding the total area, then subtracting the area of the wooden frame, or, by calculating just the area of the inner picture, by subtracting the length of the overlapping wood.

    Tony and Sebastian don't forget you need to answer (the final answer) in full sentences and with the appropriate units.

  7. Hello
    So what i am thinking is that since it is a square I can just find out one side and I will be able to find out the area of the picture. So the rectangles are somehow overlapping if you understand what i am saying. So then I will have to subtract the width from the length (30-3) which equals to 27. So since it is a square i can do
    27 x 27 which equals to 729

    The area of the picture of the horsey is 729cm squared

    :)

  8. The length of the rectangular strip of wood is 30 cm.
    The picture inside the rectangular strips of wood is 3 cm less than 30 because the width of the rectangular strip is 3 cm.
    You subtract 30 - 3 which is 27. The Length and width is 27 cm.

    To find area, you have to do LxW,
    27 x 27 = 729 cm Squared

    The picture is 729 cm Squared

  9. the answer i got was a 729
    when i saw the picture the wooden blocks were not over lapping and because they were not over lapping each wood block was over by 3 centimeters. i got that by subtracting 3 from 30 and then that got me 27. then i did 27 times 27 because it is a square and that got me 729

    that has been jatin and theres my 2 cents
