Friday Activity - Me to We!

On Friday we were asked, in small groups, to brainstorm and research some local and international charities. We did this so that our “Me to We” initiatives throughout this current school year can be focused and purposeful. It is always more powerful and endearing to put a “face” on the charities we wish to raise money for and advocate for. By researching and exploring different charities we see that they are quite interesting and unique in their own ways, and that a charity’s stated goals or objectives can effectively reflect our passion or desire to advocate for that charity in this year.

We will continue to research and investigate various charities this upcoming Friday. Groups will be asked to select one local and one international charity, and jot-down some specific information about their selections (written in a Google Document or Google Presentation).

Groups are asked to include:
- the charity’s name
- its goal/objective
- 3 detailed/supported reasons why this charity should be chosen (think persuasive writing!)
- a concluding sentence or “lasting hook”.

For more information on the “Me to We” enterprise visit: http://www.metowe.com/

Also, check-out the video of Friday’s very entertaining “We Day”, held in Vancouver:

Finally, if you’re interested in reading more about Marc and Craig Kielburger’s Me to We background information and philosophical ideals, please see Mr. Milette about borrowing the Me to We memoir (written by Marc and Craig).

Math POTW #5 - SUPER CHALLENGE!!!!

                                                                Looking for Nothing

The product of the positive integers 1 to 6 is:
                                                    6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 720
and can be written in an abbreviated form as 6!. We say, "6 factorial ". So 6! = 720.

The product of the positive integers from 1 to 12 is
                                          12 x 11 x 10 ... 3 x 2 x 1 = 479 001 600
and can be written in an abbreviated form as 12!. We say, "12 factorial ".

The ... represents the product of all of the missing integers between 10 and 3.

For a positive integer n, the product of the positive integers from 1 to n is n!.

Find the smallest possible value of n such that n! ends in exactly six zeroes.

Math POTW #4

Mmmmmmm......Chocolate!
The Vaughan Rangers hockey team is selling chocolate bars as a fundraiser. Only one type of chocolate bar is being sold, and each bar sells for $2.70. Amanda, Ben, Cole and David pool their money together to buy a total of 5 chocolate bars. Amanda paid $8.10, Ben paid $2.70 and Cole paid $1.80. David paid the remainder. They divide the chocolate bars so that the fraction of the total that each person paid is equal to the fraction of the total of chocolate that each person receives.

How much chocolate should each person receive?

(This is your first particularly "challenging" question. Go for it!)
