Math POTW #30 (and POTW #29 answer is below)

Below is the latest POTW:

And here is the answer to last week's baseball POTW 29

  1. To solve this question I decided to add up all of the distances (jumping, walking, etc.). Then, I divided the 5000 (total meters) by the combined total (120) and I achieved 41.6666. Next, I toke 41 wholes of each and multiplied:

    70 meters running x 41 = 2870
    15 meters hopping x 41 = 615
    35 meters walking x 41 = 1435

    ________

    Total = 4920 meters total after 41 of each round.

    Then we still had 80 meters left which would equal 1 more running lap and 2/3 more hopping.

    ___ Now to find percentages

    Total laps = 124 and 2/3

    out of which

    42 or 33.6% = running
    41 2/3 or 33.4% = hopping
    41 or 32.8% = Walking

    This is almost accurate as hopping was a .66

    1. This is actually depending on lengths and NOT area ran. Will update this soon.

  2. To answer this question, I added the numbers together to see how many meters each cycle of running, hopping and walking is.
    70+15+35=120
    This is 120m or 41 and 2 third cycles out of 5000m. Therefore the 2 thirds is 80m because 2/3 out of 120 is 80. Also it is the full 70m of running and 2 thirds of the hopping or 10m. Now, we will multiply 41 to each number (70, 15 and 35) and the two thirds accordingly.
    70*41=2870
    35*41=1435
    15*41=615
    We have to add 70 to 2870 to get 2940 and 10 to 615 to get 625. Therefore the final numbers are 2940m for running, 625m for hopping and 1435m for walking. Now to calculate the percentage, we will divide each of these numbers by 5000 and multiplying it by 100.
    Final answers:
    Hopping=625/5000*100=12.5%
    Running=2940/5000*100=52.8%
    Walking=1435/5000*100=28.7%

  3. All of the Activities add up 120 m.
    The next step would be to dived 5000 by 120.
    The product would be 41.6666667.
    Rounding down this would be 41 of each activity
    _______________________________________

    Next I had to multiply the distance the distance of 1 by 41 ( how many repeats)
    70m x 41 = 2870
    15 x 41 = 615
    35 x 41 = 1435

    The sum (added together) of all of these products (multiplication) is 4920.
    That means 80 more meters have to be travelled. To do that the students may run 1 lap and do 10/15 of the hopping (2/3) to equal 80 meters.
    Then I would have to add the previously mentioned numbers to the already existing numbers (41 of each) to get 124 total laps and 2/3 of a lap

    42 of Running
    41 2/3 of hopping
    41 of Walking

    These in percentages would be
    Running = 33.6%
    Hopping = 33.4% (So far it is 67%
    Walking = 33% (100% in total)

  4. 70 + 15 + 35 = 120
    5000/120 = 41.6667 (42)
    (70 x 42) + (15 x 42) + (35 x 42) = 5040
    5040 is too much so we can remove 1 round of walking and 1/3 of hopping

    42 rounds of running
    41.6 rounds of hopping
    41 rounds of walking

    42 + 41.6 + 41 = 124.6

    Total laps of 124.6
    Running is about 33.7%
    Hopping is about 33.3%
    Walking is about 32.9%

    1. Disreagard my previous answer, as I have realized that I have made a mistake.

      The correct answer would be
      running = 58.85%
      Hopping = 12.5%
      Walking = 28.7%

      I found this by adding up all of the components of the marathon to get 4920. Then to calculate the percentages I had to multiply 70 x 42 (total running laps done) to get 2940 and then I had to divide that by 50 (1% of the total) to get 58.8%.

      Next I had to multiply 15 x 41 to get 615, Also adding 10 m (the need amount to finish the marathon). Next I took 625 and divided that by 50 (1% of total) to get 12.5%

      Finally I took the walking component which was 35 x 41 to reach the total of 1435 meters, also dividing it by 50 to get 28.7% walked

      58.8% + 12.5% + 28.7% = 100%
      Therefore they
      Ran = 58.8%
      Hopped = 12.5%
      Walked = 28.7%

    2. I like how you double-checked your work and then made some revisions here.

    3. I only noticed that it would be odd to run more than hop, but have their percentages be so close together

    4. I was worried for a second, everybody had that answer :)

  5. Answer is 41. I guessed and checked. I tried 40, then 45, then 44, then 43, 42 and finally got the answer which was 41. 41 multiplied by the activities does not make exactly 5km but is the closest whole number to the answer.

  6. The correct answer was done by Leon K and Leo. Great job to you both. If you obtained a different answer, do you see why that may be?

    Final Answers: To complete the course, participants run 58:7% of the distance, hop 12:5% of the distance and walk 28:7% of the distance.
