POTW #4: Surface Area
Here's how I solve the problem :
ReplyDeleteThe biggest cube:
3x3= 9m squared per side x 6 sides equals
9x6=54m squared
The bottom cube has a total surface area of 54m squared
The second biggest cube:
2x2=4m squared per side x 6 sides equals
4x6= 24m squared
The middle cube has an total surface area of 24m squared
The Smallest cube:
1x1=1m squared per side x 6 sides equals
1x6=6m
The top cube has a surface area of 6m squared
To find the total surface area:
From bottom cube to middle cube:
Since the middle cube’s bottom is 4m you just have to take away 4m squared from the top of the big cube which is 9m squared, which equals 5m squared remaining, then we add the remaining 5 sides of each cube:
4x5=20
9x5=45
45+20=65m squared
The two stacked blocks have a surface area of 65+5 which equals 70m squared of surface area
Add the smallest cube:
Now we take 1m away from 4m ( the bottom of the smallest cube to the middle cube) which is 3m remaining, before we add the remaining sides we must take 1m from the total surface area because we just used another side of the middle cube so we have to take 1m of (70m-1m=69m)
Add the remain sides
1x5=5m there is 5m squared of remaining so we add 5m to 69m to get 74m squared
The total surface area of the stack is 74m squared because when you take away the area being use by the top and middle block (1m+4m=5m) and then added all the sides together to double check (54+24+6=84m squared), you just double the amount of sides taken away because you are taking form the lower cube to equal 10m squared. So 84m squared subtract 10m squared to equal 74m squared. The surface area of the stacked blocks is 74m squared.
Sorry I forgot to put my answer in, this is my real thing.
Delete((1 x 1) x 5) + ((2 x 2) x5) + ((3 x 3) x 6) = SA
I started by Putting everything into an equation. Then I started solving the brackets.
((1 x 1) x 5) = 5 ((2 x 2) x 5) = 20 ((3 x 3) x 6) = 54
After that I just added everything up and got my answer.
5 + 20 + 54 = 79
SA = 79
((1 x 1) x 5) + ((2 x 2) x5) + ((3 x 3) x 6) = SA
ReplyDeleteI started by Putting everything into an equation. Then I started solving the brackets.
((1 x 1) x 5) = 5 ((2 x 2) x 5) = 20 ((3 x 3) x 6) = 54
After that I just added everything up and got my answer
To find the answers I started by figuring out the amount of faces exposed on each cube. The first cube had 5 exposed faces meaning 1x1=1 x 5. That means the first box is 5m squared. Then I do the second box. Since there are only 4 fully exposed faces and the side lengths are 2 m that means 2x2=4x4=16. However there is still the partially covered to face. To solve this I know that the faces of the first cube =1m so I simply did 4-1=3 and added that to 16 to get 19. I then did the exact same processes to the last cube. 4x9=36 + 5 for the covered face= 41. However we I still needed to factor in bottom face so I added 9 to get the ur face area of the 3rd cube being 50m squared. Then I added 5+19+50 to get the total surface area and answer of 74m squared.
ReplyDeleteMy answer is 74m squared.
ReplyDeleteOne face of each cube is given by the height times the width.
Cube one's face is 1m square
Cube two's face is 4m square
Cube three's face is 9m square
5 faces of cube one are showing so cube one's surface area is 5m squared.
4 full faces of cube two are showing so 4*4= 16
5 full faces of cube three are showing so 9*5= 45
now adding what we have right now together, you get 5+16+45 with equals 66
But you still have the partly covered faces of cube two and three to calculate.
Cube two's covered face is calculated by 4(the area of one face)- 1 (the area of one of cube one's faces)
The answer is 3, and added to the previous 66, we now have 69.
Cube 3's covered face is calculated by 9(one of cube three's faces) - 4(one of cube two's faces).
The answer is 5, and added to 69, we get 74.
So the answer is that the surface area of this shape is 74m squared.
The answer is 74 Square Meters.
ReplyDeleteThis is my solution to the question:
1.Calculate the mass of the cubes:
Largest 3x3x6= 54
Medium 2x2x6= 24
Smallest 1x1x6= 6
2. Subtract the area of faces that connect one cube to the other.
L. 3x3= 9 One face of the largest cube is merged with one face of the medium. [9-4=5 left(-4)]
M. 2x2= 4 One face of the smallest cube is merged with the medium cube. (4-1=3) +loss of one face from touching largest cube
S. 1x1= 1 One face of the smallest cube is lost to the medium cube. (6-1x1)
L. 54-4=50
M. 24-2x2-1x1=19
S. 6-1x1=5
3. Add them up.
50+19+5= 74
The answer is 74m2
An alternate solution is to multiply each the area of a single face of all cubes by 5 and then add 9-5 to the product (5 in 9-5 is m2 lost by merging the medium face touching a face of the largest cube to the largest cube's face and the m2 lost through the merging of the medium face touching the smallest cube's face to the smallest cube's face (4+1 in order in text)
to add 9m2 (3x3) is what you will see if looking from above (visually a 3x3 face) Based on this 5 would be the additional lost sides clipping with the cube below it.
DeleteHere is how I tried to solve the problem :
ReplyDelete- First, I figured out the surface area of a 3m x 3m. 3x3=9m2
- Then I multiplied it by 5 surfaces that are impartially covered or not covered at all. 9 x 6 = 54m2
-afterwards, I multiplied the length of a 2x2 by 2. 2x2= 4. then I take that away from the previous amount from the top. 54-4= 50 m2.
- After doing that, I multiplied 6 surface areas by 4m2. 4m2 x 6= 24m2. then I added it to the total surface area. 24 + 50=74
-Then after that, I multiplied 1 by 1 for L * W. 1x1=1. then I multiplied it by 6. 1 x 6= 6m2. Then I added it to the to the total. 74+6-1= 79. since I forgot that if a face is covered, then both of the places loses it's surface area. so then I put it into the equation now. 79-2x2=75. 75-1x1= 74
Therefore, The surface area of the cube stack is 74.
sorry, I meant 74m2
DeleteWhat I first did was find the the surface area of each side of each block
ReplyDelete1x1=1
2x2=4
3x3=9
The top 2 blocks have 1 side blocked so I have to only multiply 5 sides
1x5=5
4x5=20
9x6=54
Then I needed to see how space the stacked blocks where taking away from eachother
20-1=19 because the top is blocking 1m2 from the middle block
54-4=50 because the middle is blocking 1m2 from the bottom block
Now I have to add them all up
50+19=69
69+5=74
Therefore, the surface area of this figure is 74m2
To solve this problem, I first found the total surface area of each cube:
ReplyDeleteSurface area of small cube:
Since every side of a cube is the same, and there are 6 sides to a cube, but the first cube has 5 sides fully visible, the middle cube has 4 sides fully visible and the bottom cube has 5 sides fully visible;
Small cube:
1 side = 1*1 = 1 m squared
1*5 ( number of visible sides) = 5 m squared
Medium cube:
1 side = 2*2 = 4 m squared
4*4 (number of visible sides) = 16 m squared
Large cube:
1 side = 3*3 = 9 m squared
9*5 (number of visible sides) = 45 m squared
But we also have to include the areas of the partly visible sides. So, starting with the top of the middle cube which is partly covered by the bottom cube, I have to subtract the area of a side of the small cube from the area of a side of the middle cube:
4 (area of one side of middle cube) - 1 (area of one side of large cube) = 3 m squared
I have to do the same thing for the middle and bottom cubes:
9 (area of one side of bottom cube) - 4 (area of one side of middle cube) = 5 m squared
Finally, I have to add all of the areas together:
5 + 16 + 45 + 3 + 5 = 21 + 48 + 5 = 69 + 5 = 74 m squared
Therefore the total surface area is 74 metres squared.
The answer that I got was 74 cubic metres.
ReplyDeleteThis is how I solved the problem...
1x1=1x5 sides=5 cubic metres
2x2=4x5 sides=20 cubic metres
3x3=9x6 sides=54 cubic metres
After finding the separate surface areas(above), I subtracted the bottom of the top two squares from the ones under them:
20 - 1 = 19 cubic metres
54 - 4 = 50 cubic metres
Then I added them all together:
5 + 19 + 50 = 74 cubic metres.
I first found the surface area of all the sides individual.
ReplyDelete1m x 1m= 1m squared x 5= 5m2
2m x 2m= 4m squared x 4= 16m2
3m x 3m=9m squared x 5= 45m2
Now, I calculate the sides which are partially covered by other sides.
The top side of 2 by 2 square: 4m2 -1m2 (the side partially covering the side)= 3m2
The top 3 by 3 cube side covered by a 2 by 2 side.
9m2-4m2= 5m2
Add all the sides are up:
74m2=5m2+16m2++45m2+3m2+5m2
I first found the area of one side on each cube. The areas were 1m2, 4m2 and 9m2. Since there were 5 showing sides (full side) on the largest and smallest cubes I multiplied those by 5 and I multiplied the medium by 4 (4 sides showing). 1x5=5, 4x4=16, 9x5=45. For the partially showing sides, I subtracted the area of the surface above it from its total surface size. 9-4=5, 4-1=3. I added up all of the sides, then and got 74m cubed.
ReplyDeleteI mean 74m squared
ReplyDeleteTo find the surface area of the stack of blocks, I first found the surface area of each square and then subtracted the covered parts before adding them all together
ReplyDelete1m X 1m = 1㎡ X 6 sides = 6㎡, but you only see 5 sides so -1㎡ = 5㎡
2m X 2m = 4㎡ X 6 sides = 24㎡, but you only see 4 full sides, the other sides are partly covered/ entirely covered by the other squares. 24㎡ - (4㎡ X 2) = 16㎡. The top side is covered by the 1㎡ bottom side of the first square. 4㎡ - 1㎡ = 3㎡, so we add the remaining 3㎡ to the 16㎡. 16㎡ + 3㎡ = 19㎡.
3m X 3m = 9㎡ X 6 sides = 54㎡, but you only see 5 full sides, the others side is partly covered by the other square. 54㎡ - 9㎡ = 45㎡. The side is covered by 4㎡. 9㎡ - 4㎡ = 5㎡, so I added the remaining 5㎡ to the 45㎡. 45㎡ + 5㎡ = 50㎡.
Then I added the surface areas together:
5㎡ + 19㎡ + 50㎡ = 74㎡.
The total surface area of the 3 cubes (not including the covered parts) is 74㎡.
I first found the surface area of one face of each cube. To find surface area, I used the formula for area (lw=a), so for each cube I did one face (1*1=1 m2, 2*2=4 m2, 3*3=9 m2)
ReplyDeleteStarting with the base cube, I multiplied 9 by 6 ( the total amount of faces) since I had to count the bottom face of the bottom cube. So I had to do 9*6=54. Since one face of the middle cube is on top of the base cube, I subtracted one face of the middle cube, from the base cube's surface area (54-4=50). So 50 m2 is the surface area of the base cube.
I had to multiply one of the middle cube's face by 5 as one of the faces is blocked by the base cube. But the top cube is blocking one side of the middle cube so I had to subtract 1 from the middle cube (4*5=20, 20-1=19). This means the middle cube's surface area is 19 m2.
The top cube required me to do these equations (1*5=5m2). Since there was no cube on top of the top cube, I had to subtract nothing. I still had to multiply by 5 as it was on top of the middle cube, blocking out one face. The surface area of the top cube is 5 m2.
So with all our measurements we have, 50 m2, 19m2, and 5m2. Add it all up you get 74 m2 which means the surface area of all the cubes is 74 m2.
50+19+5=
69+5=74
First I found the surface area of all the cubes.
ReplyDelete1*1 = 1m2*6 = 6m2
2*2 = 4m2*6 = 24m2
3*3 = 9m2*6 = 54m2
Next, I subtracted the sides that were touching another side of another box.
54-4=50 Because the top face is touching the 2*2 cube
24-4-1=19 Because the the bottom face is touching the 3*3 cube which causes the whole bottom face to be lost, and also because the top face is touching the bottom of the 1*1 cube
6-1=5 Because the bottom face is touching the 2*2 cube causing the whole face to be lost
Now I add them up.
50+19+5=74m2
Therefore, the total surface area of this stack, including the bottom is 74m2.
So the 1m cube would be 1*1=1. Then times that with all the other similar sides (which is all of them, this is a square). But remove one side because it is hidden. So 1*5=5. The surface area of the 1m cube is 5m2. The 2m cube would be 2*2=4*5=20. But this time part of it is covered by the 1m cube. The sides of this cube are 1m2, so minus 1 from the 20. That is 19m2. The 3m cube would be 3*3=9.
ReplyDeleteThis time it is multiplied by 6 because the bottom is not covered. 9*6=54. Then minus the top part that is blocked. 54-4=50m2. Add them together to get the answer: 5+19+50= 74m3.
First I calculated the the total surface area of each cube excluding the base exept for the last cube
ReplyDelete1x1x1x5=5m2
2x2x2x5=40m2
3x3x3x6=54m2
Then I subtracted the the bottom sides from the smaller square from the top. For example, I subtracted the missing face on the first cube from the sum of the other cubes. In the end I got the total surface area of each cube: 5m2, 39m2, 50m2. Then I just simply added them up to get the total surface area. 5+39+50=74m2
The total surface area for the figure is 74m2.
My answer is 74m3. For the top cube I got 5m3 by finding the area of one side 1*1=1m2 and then multiplying it by 5 because there are only 5 sides I need to count since the bottom doesn't count. So I got 5m3. Then I moved onto the middle cube. Once again I found the area of one side 2*2=4m2 and then multiplying it by 5 to get 20m3. However I need to subtract 1m2 from it because the cube above it covers that part. 20-1=19m3. For the bottom square I also found the area of one (3*3=9m2) and then multiplying it. But this time I multiplied it by 6 because for this one I need all 6 sides. So this time it is 9*6=54m2. Once again I subtract one side from the cube above this one so 54-4=50. Then I add them all up. 50+19+5=74m3.
ReplyDeleteThe formula for surface area is:
ReplyDeleteL X W for each side
1st cube Is 1 meter by 1 meter so that would be 1-meter area
and 5 sides are exposed so that is 1 X 5= 5 meters cubed
2nd cube Is 2 meters by 2 meters so that would be 4-meter area
and 4 sides are exposed so that is 4 X 4= 16 meters cubed
3rd cube Is 3 meters by 3 meters so that would be 9-meter area
and 5 sides are exposed so that is 9 X 5= 45 meters cubed
for the tops of the 2 and 3-meter cubes I will subtract what the bottom is from the top
1-4= 3 three meter are for the 2-meter top
4-45= 41 there is a 41 meter area
the total of all the area is: 5+16+45+3+41=110
so the answer is 110m3
irst off, I thought to get the surface area of the first cube, and work my way down
ReplyDeleteThat was (1x1)x5=5cm2
Then there was the second cube which was 2x2
That was (2x2)x4=16cm2
I realized that the top was being covered by the 1x1 cube meaning:
2x2(4) - 1x1(1) = 3cm2
Finally came the third square which was a 3x3
That was (3x3)x5= 45cm2
There still was the same problem with the 2x2 covering the square so I did the same by subtracting the 2x2 from the 3x3
3x3(9) - 2x2(4) = 5cm2
Once I had all of the sums, I added it up to get 74cm2
5cm2 + 16cm2 + 3cm2 + 45cm2 + 5cm2 = 74cm2
First to solve the questions I had to find out the area of each side of the cube, so I did LxW:
ReplyDelete1x1=1m
2x2=4m
3x3=9m
Then I multiplied them by how many sides there where that where not covered:
1x5=5m
4x4=16m
9x5=45m
Then I calculated the answer for the top part of the boxes:
9-4=5
4-1=3
Then I added it all together and got 74m3
LxW for surface area
ReplyDelete1x1=1 1×5=5
2×2=4 4×4=16
3×3=9 9×5=45
=66
Now we got to add the tops of each box
3x3 - 2×2 =5
2×2 - 1×1=3
66+8= 74
The surface area of of the boxes are 74cm squared
Sorry this is late but I got 74m cubed
ReplyDelete1x1=1x5 sides=5 cubic metres
2x2=4x5 sides=20 cubic metres
3x3=9x6 sides=54 cubic metres
Then I subtracted the bottom of the top 2 cubes
20 - 1 = 19 m cubed
54 - 4 = 50 m cubed
Last I add them all up
5 + 19 + 50 = 74 m squared
Better late than never Caelan! Thanks.
