POTW #28 - I love tortoises (so does Isaac)

Answer to POTW 27 below. Some GREAT Grade 8 connections! As I've seen all year, Vivian offered a great answer with wonderful support and even a clarification!

  1. There is not enough information to solve this problem.

  2. 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180,

    11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176
    I then found the numbers that can be multiplied by 15, and 11 which was 165 up until 183
    That makes Terrance 15 x 11 = 165 years old. Therefore Terrance is 15, and his grandfather is 165.

  3. First I found all of multiples of 15 up to 185 and the multiples of 11 up to 185, both under 185 because jonathon is older than both tyrone and terrance and he is 185. multiples of 15 because tyrone is exactly 15 times terrance's age. 11 because 11 is the value that is multiplied to terrance's age to find tyrone's. 165/11= 15.
    Tyrone's age is 165 and Terrance's is 15

    15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180
    11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176

    Then i found the common multiple of 11 and 15 which is 165, tyrone's age.

  4. 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176 (numbers that can are divisible by 11)
    15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180, (numbers that are divisible by 15)

    The only number that is divisible by both 11 and 15 is 165 Tyrone would be 165 while Terence will be 15 if I understood the question correctly.

  5. Since Tyrone's age can not be as old as Jonathan's, you first have to get all the multiples of 15 and 11:
    15 = 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180
    11 = 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176
    The only common multiple of 11 and 15 is 165 therefore, Tyrone is 165 years old and Terrance is 15 years old.

  6. To solve this problem, I first found all the multiples of 15 and 11, that did not exceed Jonathan's age.
    15: 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180.
    11: 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176.
    The only number that overlaps both lists is 165. Therefore, Tyrone is 165 years old, and Terrance is 15.

  7. When Tyrone is 165, his age will be 11 times older than his grandson, Terrance, who is 15.
    First, I list down multiples of 15 and 11 that are under 183, Jonathan's age. The number that appears in both lists, the common multiple, would be Tyrone's age, which was 165. To find Terrance's age, I just divide Tyrone's age by 11, the quotient is 15, Terrance's age.

  8. First I listed multiples of 11 that weren't any older than Jonathan.
    11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176
    Now it is stated that Tyrone is older than 100.
    110, 121, 132, 143, 154, 165, 176
    Now I divided each number by 11 to find Terrance's age.
    10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.
    Then I looked at the multiples of 15 that were over 100 and less than Jonathan's age.
    105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180
    Then I took a pair of ages. Say 110 and 10. The nearest multiple of 15 thats under 110 is 105. Must be under 110 because the questions states ...Will... indicating that it it would be after the birthday this year. Then I looked at the difference between 110 and 105 which is 5. Next I did 15 - 5 and I got 10. However, 105/10 does not equal to 15. So that is incorrect. I did that with the rest of the numbers until I found the answer.
    The nearest multiple of 15 under 154 is 150. The difference is 4 years. So I took the age that would correspond with 154 would be 14. So 14 - 4 is 10. Then I did 150/10=15. That answer was correct. Therefore Tyrone is 154 and Terrance is 15. I believe that the other answers on this blog are wrong because in the question it didn't state that the birthday was going to make Tyrone and Terrance have a multiple of 15 and 11.
