POTW #23 (March 3rd to 10th)

If you notice above, I will begin to place the dates for completion of the POTW. Please continue to work through the problems and show all work. Notice that this week's problems require reasoning skills. There is also a great TedTalk riddle with regard (ish) to the Gr. 8 question (Cindy might have seen it).

  1. For the grade 7 potw Yvonne arrived first with licorice and a basketball, Xavier was second with pretzels and a football and Zak came last with cookies and a baseball. I got this by first solving for Yvonne because he was first by not being second and coming before Zak. He couldn't have brought the football and didn't bring cookies so he also couldn't bring a base ball so he had to have the basketball and the licorice. Then Xavier brought the pretzels and the football because he also couldn't have brought the cookies and then last is Zac.

  2. For the grade 8 potw there are 2 heroes that are seated with the heroes being across from each other. This is because the first question of 'are you a hero" they'll always say yes because the're a hero and telling the truth or they're a villain and lying. Then the second question talks about the person on their right. That means all the heroes have to have a villain on their right and the villains have to have a hero on their right. If there are more then 2 heroes then 2 or 4 of the hero's would say hero and if there was less then 1 hero at the table then 2 or 4 of the villains would say hero

  3. The order the kids arrived in was Yvonne, Xavier, and then Zak. Yvonne brought a basketball and licorice. Xavier brought a football and pretzels. Zak brought a baseball and cookies. I simply followed the order and came out with this order.

  4. For the grade 8 POTW i was bored and wanted to do something so i figured it out. The heroes and villains were sitting across from each other. This makes sense because when it says that everything said they were a hero, the real heroes would tell the truth, and the villains would lie, and say that they are actually heroes. And then when everyone said that the person to their right is a villain that also makes sense. The heroes were beside villains and the villains beside heroes. This means that the villain would lie and say the hero next to him, is a villain. And the hero would tell the truth and say that the person next to him is a villain.

  5. Grade 7 POTW:
The order that the kids arrived in the school was Yvonne first, second was Xavier and Zak was third. Yvonne brought licorice and basketball, Xavier brought pretzels and a football, and Zak brought cookies and a baseball. Work is done in my math notebook.

    Third - Zak, Cookies, Baseball

I did my work with Max and our explanation is the same.

  7. Grade 7 POTW:
    First: Yvonne, Licorice and Basketball
    Second: Xavier, Pretzels and Football
    Third: Zak, Cookies and Baseball

Using logic, I am able to figure out the all of these orders.

First of all, because we know Xavier is already second, and Yvonne is ahead of Zak, it means that the order the people came is Yvonne, Xavier, then Zak.

We also know that the person who brought cookies also brought a baseball, which means that it cannot be Yvonne since he does not bring cookies, and it cannot be Xavier because he brought a football. Therefore, Zak brought cookies and a baseball.

The last piece of info we need is that the person who brought pretzels did not bring a basketball. This means that Xavier brought pretzels because Yvonne has to bring a basketball, since the baseball and the football have already been taken. This means that Xavier brought the pretzels, and Yvonne is left with the Licorice.

And that is how I figured out the order of each!

  8. Grade 8 POTW:
For this question logic must be used.

From the first piece of logic, it is impossible to tell how many villains and superheroes there are, since all villains say that they are superheroes and all superheroes say that they are superheroes as well.

There comes in the second part.
Everyone says that to their right is a villain. Let us start off with a superhero saying this.

To the right of the superhero would be a villain, to the right of the villain would be another superhero(Since the villain lies), and to the right of that superhero would be another villain. This is a total of 4 people.

Since there are two superheroes and two villains, I can answer the question, stating that there are 2 heroes sitting in the table.

Note: The reason that nothing else works is because a villain cannot sit beside a villain, since if they say villain and there is a villain beside them, that would be the truth, which would be impossible because the villains always lie. On the other hand, superheroes also would not be sitting beside each other because, for the same reason, heroes do not lie. The other possibility is that the order is villain, hero, villain, hero, instead of what I did before, but that doesn't make a difference because if you calculate how many heroes there are there are still 2.

    Hopefully this makes sense.

I'm sorry if this is a really bad explanation but I forgot I was on my personal account so I have to retype the whole thing. Okay so, looking at numbers 2 and 3 clue, we can identify the order:
    1. Yvonne
    2. Xavier
    3. Zak
Using the rest of the clues we know:
    1.Yvonne, Basketball, Licorice
    2.Xavier, Football, Pretzals
    3.Zak, Baseball, Cookies

  18. If explanation is wanted, come see me at 155 Melville Ave, Maple, ON L6A 1Y9. Business hours: 8:15am - 2:35pm
Grade 8 POTW: There are 2 heroes.
Quick explanation: Because the 4 inhabitants stated that the people to their right are all villains, a hero sitting next to a villain would say "VILLAIN" while the same thing would happen if a villain sitting next to a hero would also say villain, making it a 1 2 1 2 thing.

  19. For the Grade 8 POTW:
Here is how I solved it:
If all answer that they are heroes
and they all say that to their right is villains
The heroes is saying the truth and the villain will have to lie meaning that there is an even amount. Because to the right of a hero has to be a villain while to the right of a villain has to be a hero.

  21. I'm so late, whoops. The answer that I got was:
Yvonne came first. She/he brought a basketball and licorice.
Xavier came second and brought a football as well as pretzels.
Zak came last with a baseball and cookies.
To figure this out I used logic and the hints/extra pieces of information they gave us. :D
