POTW #26 - Great Discussions!

We saw some great answers and complete solutions provided for last week's POTW. A few students even had very long discussions on how to solve it with their peers, and some even admitted that those discussions turned into big arguments!

  2. This is how I did the POTW, though I pretty much used guess and check:
I started from the farthest left cube.

Looking at the cube, I can see two values. They are 5 and 4. Since the opposite sides add up to 7, I know that the opposite of 5 and 4 must be 2 and 3, respectively.

That leaves two values: 1 and 6.
This is two possibilities. However, 6 at the end will not work since the opposite would be 1. Touching face would have to add up to 9, but since there is no 8 on a die, this would be impossible.
This gives 1,6,3,4,5,2. Now I have 4 on that same cube, so the opposite is 3. This again leaves me with 1 and 6.

From what I did before, I realize that the touching face cannot be 1 since there is no 8 to add up to 9. Thus, the touching face has to be 6 and the end of that die would be 1.

This pattern goes 1,6,3,4. 4 is the value of where P is.

Therefore, P is equal to 4.

    (This is very confusing)

  4. I first see the values 4 and 5 and since the opposite will add up to seven, 3 and 2 is used leaving us with 1 and 6. With some guess and check, the 1 isn't touching the other side instead 6 is. That means three is touching the 6, and 4 would be on the other side touching it, so on the second last die, the numbers 5 (5+4), 2(outside), 4 and 3 are used. We have 1 and 6 left and since we can see 5 and 2 being used, we are left with 4 and 3 on the last die. Similar to the situation from the very beginning and I am left with P being 4. Sorry for late POTW

P is equal to 4. I used the guess and check method, and the work is in my math book.
