The stories around the Olympics can be quite inspirational, even without the context of sport. For example, North and South Korea have began talks on better communications and relations, all essentially due to the 2018 Olympics being in their backyard! In honour of the Olympics in Pyeongchang this week's POTWs are Olympic-related.
POTW #19 Gr. 19 Gr. 8 Question:
POTW #19 Gr. 7 Question:
POTW #18 Solution:
Grade 8 POTW
ReplyDeleteIt will be long if I explain it.
Anton - Frieda - Biathlon
Brian - Jess - Slalom
Caleb - Grace - Luge
Daniel - Isabelle - Curling
Ezra - Helga - Moguls
Grade 7 POTW
ReplyDeleteExplaining what I did will be to long.
Christina - 3rd - China
Martha - 1st - Canada
Natalie - 4th - New Zealand
Silvia - 2nd - Croatia
Grade 7 POTW:
ReplyDeleteInfo:
- 4 people: Christina, Martha, Natalie, Silvia
- 4 placements: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
- 4 countried: Canada, China, Croatia, New Zealand
Hints:
- Christina did not beat Martha in the competition.
- The Croatian athelte did not finish first.
The athlete from New Zealand finished in 4th.
- Silvia finished ahead of the competitor from China.
- Christina is from one of the "C" countries.
- Silvia is not from Canada.
(I'm doing my work on paper as well)
First I can cross off Canada from Silvia because the hint says that she is not from Canada. If Christina did not beat Martha, that means that Martha beat Christina, meaning that Christina could not have been first and Martha could not have been fourth. If Silvia finished ahead of the competitor from China, that means that she is not from China. If Christina is from one of the "C" countries, that crossed out the only other country: New Zealand. If the athlete from New Zealand finished foruth and Christina is not from New Zealand, she could not have placed 4th. If Silvia finished ahead of the Chinese competitor, than that means that she cannot have finished fourth. That leaves only one other competitor that reamins fourth: Natalie. If she placed fourth, that mens that she is from New Zealand. I can cross out NZ from all of the other competitors options. And that means that Silvia is from Crotia (since all the other countries are crossed out). I can cross out Crotia from all the other competitors options. If Silvia finished ahead of the competitor in China and the lowest position placement now is third, I can cross out 3rd from Silvia. Since Silvia is Croatian and it said that the Crotian athlete did not finish first, I can cross that out, leaving only 2nd left. Silvia finished second. This leaves only Martha for first place and Christina for third place. If Silvia finished ahead of the Chinese competitor, Christina must have been the Chinese compeitor because she is the only athlete that does not yet have a country and finished after Silvia. That leaves Martha as Canadian.
Christina: 3rd, China
Martha: 1st, Canada (GO CANADA!!)
Natalie: 4th, New Zealand
Silvia: 2nd, Croatia.
I love these types of questions. Mrs. Kim used to give them out. Please have more of these for POTW. :)
Yes, students do seem to love these logic/reasoning type questions. I am glad you enjoyed them Fiona.
DeleteGrade 8 POTW:
ReplyDeleteI can start by circling Grace and Caleb together and crossing off Grace as an option for all the other competitors. Jess participates in the Slalom and she is not related to Daniel, so I can cross off Slalom as an option for the other females and Daniel for her. Isabelle is not in the Luge, so I can cross that off as an option for her. Ezra and Helga are siblings and that are in the Moguls, so I can cross off Helga and the Moguls as an option for both males and females. Anton is in the Biathlon and is not Isabelle's brother, so I can cross off the Biathlon as an option for the males and Isabelle for him. If Grace and Caleb are siblings, they should be in the same sport. Grace has the Biathlon, Curling and Luge, and Caleb has Curling, Luge and Slalom. I can cross out Biathlon and Slalom for both. Anton has Biathlon circled for him and the only option for a sister that has an option of Biathlon is Freida. The only sister option for Daniel is Isabelle, leaving Jess for Brian. Since Jess is in the Slalom and Brain is her brother, Brian is also in the Slalom. If Isabelle is Daniel's sister, and she does curling (it's the only option left), than Daniel also does curling. That leaves Luge for Grace and Caleb.
Anton, Freid- Biathlon
Brain, Jess- Slalom
Caleb, Grace- Luge
Daniel, Isabelle- Curling
Ezra, Helga- Moguls
Yay! This took a while to do..(I had to restart this because of errors).
I'd prefer not to explain, because I don't even think that I would make sense for this.
ReplyDeleteAnswer:
Anton: Frieda. Sport: Biathlon.
Brian: Jess. Sport: Slalom.
Caleb: Grace. Sport: Luge.
Daniel: Isabelle. Sport: Curling.
Ezra: Helga. Sport: Moguls.
If someone wants me to explain, I can, but it'll be too hard to write it in words without the chart.

Grade 7:
ReplyDeleteChristina: 3rd, China
Martha: First Canada
Natalie, 4th, New Zealand
Silvia: 2nd, Croatia
grade 7:
ReplyDeleteIt took me some time to figure it out and some use of guess and check so I won't be showing my work.
here's my final answer:
#1 = Martha from Canada
#2 = Silvia from Croatia
#3 = Christina from China
#4 = Natalie from New Zealand
POTW #19:
ReplyDeleteHelga + Ezra = Moguls
Frieda + Anton = Biathlon
Grace + Caleb = Luge
Isabella + Daniel = Curling
Jess + Brian = Slalom
Work done on hard copy and in brain.
Grade 8 POTW:
ReplyDeleteAfter following the chart, crossing and checking corresponding with the clues, certain parts are still left out. Once filling out clues on the chart, we know that since Jess is participating in Slalom, that means Anton can't be her brother, since he is participating in the Biathlon. This means that Anton's sister is Frieda, and they are doing Biathlon. Now, the only brother left for Jess is Brian, which means that Daniel's sister is Isabelle. And for Daniel and Isabelle, the only sport left that they have is curling, meaning Grace and Caleb are doing Luge. So in conclusion:
1. Anton - Frieda - Biathlon
2. Brian - Jess - Slalom
3. Caleb - Grace - Luge
4. Daniel - Isabelle - Curling
5. Ezra - Helga - Moguls.
Grade 8:
ReplyDeleteAnton and Frieda are in the biathlon

ReplyDelete(I did my work on paper)
I'd prefer not to explain because this was very trail-and-error, and I had to restart because of many mistakes made. So:
Christina: 3rd (China)
Martha: 1st (Canada)
Natalie: 4th (New Zealand)
Silvia: 2nd (Croatia)

ReplyDeleteI did my work on paper. However, to sum up my caculations, I re-created the chart given in the question and inputed things where I felt they went. I then realized that I forgot a sport (which was why there were two "extra" people), so I re-did some stuff and then came to this conclusion...
Luge: Grace and Caleb
Moguls: Ezra and Helga
Curling: Isabelle and Daniel
Slalom: Jess and Brian
Biathlon: Frieda and Anton
