Grade 7/8 POTW What has to be done to obtain the highest result is to get as a high of a numerator possible and low denominator. Of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, we know that this order is least to greatest. Therefore, the highest fraction we can make is 7/1 (highest numerator, lowest denominator). Now we take 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and repeat twice. The final fractions are 7/1 + 6/2 + 5/3 = 42/6 + 18/6 + 10/6 = 70/6 = 35/3 = 11 2/3. The highest possible sum is 11 2/3.

Using logic, you need to figure out the largest possible numerator with the smallest possible denominator. The largest possible fraction here right now is 7/1 which is equal to 7. Then,we can use the other numbers to make fractions: 7/1, 6/2, 5/3 7/1+ 6/2+ 5/3 42/6+ 18/6+ 10/6=70/6 35/3 11 2/3 The highest possible sum is 11 2/3. :))
To find the largest value, all you have to do is get the largest numerator and the smallest denominator available. This gives you the largest amount of wholes, and it can add up the the largest value possible, the one that you want. So, 7/1 + 6/2 + 5/3 = 7+3+5/3 = 11 2/3. -Alan
This question was quite easy. The highest value/fraction we can possibly obtain with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, is 7/1. That gives us a whole number of 7. Then, we simply follow the consecutive numbers in the denominator and numerator. 7/1, 6/2, 5/3.
The LCM of 1, 2, and 3 is 6. 7/1 = 42/6 6/2 = 18/6 5/3 = 10/6 After all of these are added together, I got a sum of 11 2/3.
Therefore, the largest sum that can be obtained is 11 2/3.

This question was quite easy.
