  2. Grade 7/8 POTW:

(I DID MY WORK ON PAPER, BUT ILL TRY TO EXPLAIN WHAT I DID)

    Key Info:
    1. Canadian, 3rd place and ski jumper are all different people
    2. Belgian was faster than Liz.
    3. Cross country skier did not come in third
    4. Carly came in second and is not a ski jumper.
    5. Anita was faster than the person in the biathlon.

From #2, we can conclude that Liz is not from Belgium. From #3, we can conclude that the cross-country skier did not place third. We know a lot of information from #4 because it is not as vague as the others. Since Carly is not the ski jumper from #1, she must be either the Canadian or the person in 3rd place. From #5, we know that the biathlon athlete could not have been first and Anita could not have been 3rd. This leaves only 1st place for Anita and 3rd place for Liz. Since #1 tells us that third place isn’t the Canadian, we know that Liz is not Canadian, leaving only Denmark left. Since Carly isn’t the ski jumper and the first clue says the ski jumper, third place and Canadian are all different people, and ALSO also, we know that Carly could have only been the Canadian or the third place and ALSO also, since the 3rd place is already taken, we know that she is the Canadian. This leaves Belgium for Anita. Since in clue 3, the cross country skier did not come in third, we know that Liz cannot be the cross country skier. From clue 5, we know that Anita is not the biathlon person. From #1, we know that Anita is the only person so far that doesn’t have one of the characteristics listed, so she has to be the person who has the characteristic that is not “labeled” yet. She is the ski jumper. This leaves Liz as the biathlon and Carly as the cross country skier.

Therefore, Anita is the Belgian that came first and ski jumps, Carly is the Canadian who came second and does cross country skiing and Liz is the 3rd place from Denmark who also competes in the biathlon.

(i really like these problems. more please?)

  4. Grade 7/8 POTW
    Here are the five clues:
    1. The canadian athlete, the person who came in third place, and the ski jumper are three different people.
    2. The belgian was faster in downhill skiing than Liz.
    3. The cross-country skier did not come in third place in the downhill skiing event.
    4. Carly came in second place in downhill skiing and she is not a ski jumper.
    5. Anita was faster in downhill skiing than the athlete who also competes in the biathlon.
The first clue concludes that the person who got third isn’t the ski jumper or canadian and vice versa, and the the ski jumper isn’t canadian and vice versa. The second clue concludes that the Belgian was faster than Liz meaning the Belgian isn’t third, and Liz isn’t first, and Liz isn’t Belgian and vice versa. The only person who can be third now is the Belgian, meaning the Belgian is third and can’t be first or second and vice versa. The third clue concludes that the cross country skier didn’t come in third meaning that the cross country skier isn’t third, and can’t be Denmark. At this point, the the only other athlete that finished third is the Biathlon athlete, meaning she finished third and didn’t finish first or second. The fourth clue says that Carly came second, and isn’t a ski jumper. Therefore, Anita and Liz can’t be second, and Carly can’t be a ski jumper. By now, Liz’s only option is third, meaning Anita can’t be third, which means she must be first. This also helps conclude that Liz came third, is a biathlon athlete, and is Danish. The only available option for Anita, is also ski jumping meaning she can’t be in the biathlon or cross country. We also know that the only option for the ski jumper is Belgium meaning the ski jumper, who is Anita, must be Belgian. This leaves Carly being the second place Canadian who also does cross-country skiing.
Therefore, Anita came in first, is Belgian, and ski jumps, Carly came in second, is Canadian, and does cross-country skiing, and Liz came in third, is Danish, and does Biathlon.
To double check this, we can use the unused clue five claiming Anita was faster than the biathlon athlete. Anita came first which is faster than the Biathlon’s third making this true.
