Most students seemed to get the correct answer on POTW #8 of 93 minutes. I know that many students mentioned it being a rather easy question. If this is the case, then try to solve the question in a different way from your peers. Maybe use a visual, some chart or graph, perhaps use algebra, or find some other unique way.
Below is POTW #9:
To get 10% of 567 I did 567 divided into ten to get 56.7. So I added 56.7 to get 623.7 dollars a week. Now for hours I did 45 divided into 10 to get 4.5. So I subtracted 4.5 from 45 to 40.5. Now to get the final answer I did 623.7 divided by 40.5 to get 15.4. So his new salary is $15.4. His old salary was $12.6 and I got this by dividing 567 into 45. So his salary increased by 2 dollars and 8 cents.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I wanted to find his new salary for a week. Since there is a 10% of increase you have to do 567x1.10 to give me $623.70. In the question it also states that the hours decrease by 10% which means you have to do 45x0.9 to give u 40 1/2 or 40.5 hours. Now to find the new hourly rate you have to divide 623.70 by 40.5 to give you $15.40/hour. However, since the question is asking you to find out the difference between the old and new hourly salary of Harry Wirks you still need to find out the old one by dividing 567 by 45 to give you $12.60/hour. $15.40-$12.60=$2.80 so Harry's salary increased by $2.80 per hour.
ReplyDeleteFirst I divided 567 by 10, getting 56.7 which is 10%. so I added 567 to 56.7 because he gained a 10% salary. 567 + 56.7= 623.7
ReplyDeleteweekly salary= 623.7
Now I have to find how many hours he now works
45/10= 4.5
45-4.5=40.5
After I found the weekly hours, I found how much he gets per hour
623.7/40.5=15.4
then I found the old hour pay and subtracted it from the current one
567/45=12.6
15.4-12.6=2.8
2.8= Change between the hourly pay
1. Calculate + 10% wage
ReplyDelete567/10=56.7
Question says is increased by 100% + 10%, so add 56.7 to 567
567+56.7= 623.7
2. Divide by 45 - 45/10 (41.5)/Hours
623.7/41.5
=15.03 (rounded) - This gets me the hourly wage
3. Calculate the former wages
$567/45h=$12.6/1h
4. Subtract difference
15.03(Round to hundredths/cents) - 12.6 = 2.37
Mr. Wirks now earns 2.37 dollars more per hour.
This is the third time I tried to post this due to internet problems
The first thing I did to answer this question is divide his weekly pay by the time he works to get his hourly pay. 567 / 45 = 12.6 $/h. His weekly pay is increased by 10%. ((567 / 10) * 11) = 623.7 $/W. He works 10% less than before every week. ((45 - (45/10)) = 40.5 H/W. Then I divide the new pay by the new hours to get the new pay per hour. 623.7 / 40.5 = 15.4 $/H . Then to calculate the difference, I take away the old pay from the new pay. 15.4 $ - 12.6 = +1.8 $/h. Harry wirks gets 1.8 more dollars an hour than before.
ReplyDeleteThat typo was embarrassing, I meant to say was2.8$/h.
DeleteNot embarrassing Ramzi, you were correct. Just a small typo. I knew what you meant.
DeleteIf Harry works 45 hours a week, that it 2700 minutes.
ReplyDelete2700 ÷ 10 = 270 = 10%
If Harry's work is reduced by 10%, then that means 270 minutes is subtracted leaving 90%.
2700 - 270 = 2430 minutes.
$567 is what he earns in 1week
567 ÷ 10 = $56.70 = 10%
If Harry's paycheque is increased by 10%, then 56.70 would be added.
$567 + $56.70 = $623.70
To find the new pay per hour after the +10% and -10%, I first had to calculate the new weekly pay and hours per week.
ReplyDeleteThe weekly pay is +10%, and I know that to find 10%, I move the decimal place up once. So 10% = 56.7 (10% of 567), so to + 10%, 567 + 56.7 = 623.7. So the new weekly pay is $623.70.
The hours per week is -10%, and I know that to find 10%, I move the decimal place up once. So 10% = 4.5 (10% of 45), so to - 10%, 45 - 4.5 = 40.5. So the new hours per week is 40.5.
Then I need to find the amount or pay per hour, and to find that, I divide 623.7 by 40.5, which equaled 15.4. So $15.4 per hour.
But the question asks to compare the previous hourly pay to the new hourly pay, so I still have to find the previous hourly pay.
So I divide 567 by 45 and get $12.6 per hour.
The new hourly pay is $2.8 higher than the previous hourly pay (15.4 - 12.6 = 2.8)
I will be posting answers in bunches this time. I have the ones already completed awaiting my moderation. Please complete this POTW ASAP. I am withholding published answers this time around because I want everyone to try it on their own without seeing their peers' work.
ReplyDeleteFor this question I have to find the difference between Harry Wirks' old and new hourly rate of pay.
ReplyDeleteI know that he gets paid $567 per 45 hours a week. I need to find out how much he is paid per hour.
567/ 45 = 12.6
OK, it says his weekly salary has been increased by 10%, so we need to figure out what 10% of 567 is.
50% of 567 is 283.5, divided by 5 would be 10%.
283.5/ 5 = 56.7
10% of 567 = 56.7
Now we add 56.7 to 567
56.7 + 567 = 623.7
Therefor, his new hourly pay is $623.7
His hours are also reduced by 10%, so we need to figure out what 10% of 45 is.
45/ 2 = 22.5
22.5/5 = 4.5
Therefor, 10% of 45 is 4.5
45 - 4.5 = 40.5
So, his new hourly rate of pay is $623.7 per 40.5 hours (40h 30min)
It went from $567: 45h to $623.7: 40.5h
The change was plus $56.7: -4.5h
Here's How I solved it:
ReplyDelete567 divided by 45 to find how much Harry is paid per hour
567 / 45 = 12.6 Harry is paid $12.60 per hour before the rate up/rate down.
After the change Harry is paid 10% more, so 10% = 1/10 so 567 divided by 10 to get ten percent is: 56.7, Harry is paid $56.70 more dollars so in total, he now gets paid $623.70 dollars.
After the change Harry works 10% less than before so you divide 45 by ten to get 10%:
45 / 10 = 4.5 Harry works 4.5 hours less meaning Harry worked 4 hours and 30 minutes less because 0.5 of an hour is 30 minutes, Meaning harry now works for 40 hours and 30 minutes.
To find the rate we just divide $623.70 by 40.5 to get $15.4, Harry now has a rate of $15.40/hour.
Old Rate: $12.60/hour
New Rate: $15.40/hour
This is how I solved the inquiry
ReplyDeleteI started off with what I already knew...
Old:
$567/45hours
New:
+ 10% each
Then I found 10% of $567, the weekly pay...
567/100 = 5.67 is 1%, so 10% = x10
5.67 x 10 = 56.7 = 10%
Since, the pay is increased by 10%, I added the 10% to his original salary...
$567 + $56.7 = $623.7
Next, I found 10% of 45 hours, the work hours...
45/100 = 1% = 0.45
0.45 x 10 = 10% = 4.5
Then, I subrtacted the 10% from the current work hours...
45h - 4.5h = 40.5h = 40h and 30mins
So, the new pay rate is $623.7 / 40h and 30mins
Now I have to find the hourly rate, by dividing by the number of hours...
Old = 567/ 45 & 45/45
= $12.6/ h
New = 623.7/40.5 & 40.5/40.5
= $15.4/h
Finally, as I have gathered all the neccessary info, I can calculate the difference between the two salaries...
$15.4/h - $12.6/h = $2.8
All in all, the difference between the two salaries is $2.8
$567 * 1.1 = $623.7
ReplyDelete45 Hours *0.9 = 40.5 Hours
567/45=$12.6/hour
623.7/40.5=$15.4/hour
$15.4-$12.6=$2.8
Therefore his hourly pay has increased by $2.8
1) Divide 567 by 10 and add quotient.
ReplyDelete2) Divide 623.7 by 10 and subtract quotient.
3) Divide 561.33 by 40.5 to get hourly salary.
Harry Wirks' hourly salary is $13.86.
My solution was that his new hourly rate of pay is $1.8 more than his old hourly rate of pay. This means that his new income would be $15.4 an hour, working 40.5 hours a week. To solve this problem, I first calculated his new income and his new hours worked weekly. To do so, I found 10% of his old income (which ended up being $56.7) and 10% of his old hours worked weekly (4.5 hours). Then, I added 56.7 to his old income (567) getting a new income of 623.7, and subtracted 4.5 hours from his old hours worked weekly (45) to get a new hours worked weekly of 40.5. Then, I divided his new weekly income by his new hours worked weekly to find out how much money he earned an hour. I did the same for his old income. This told me that with his new schedule, he'd earn $15.4 an hour, and with his old schedule, he earned $12.6 an hour. Then, to find the change between these hourly rates of pay, I subtracted them, giving me a change of $1.8.
ReplyDeleteTo solve this question, I first found his new weekly pay rate.
ReplyDeletePay Rate Per Week:
Before = $567
10% of $567 = $56.7
$567 - 10% = $510.3
Hours Per Week:
Before = 45 hrs
10 % of 45 hrs = 4.5 hrs
45 hrs - 10 % = 40.5 hrs
Then, I divided each weekly pay rate (before and now) by the amount of hours, to find out how much he would make in one hour.
Before - 567 ÷ 45 = $12.6 per hour
Now - 510.3 ÷ 40.5 = $12.6 per hour
There is no change from his old hourly pay rate to his new hourly pay rate.
So he's paid $567 every week. Every week, he works for 45 hours. So, first we find the 10% for how much he is paid (567), then minus that from the current pay.
ReplyDeleteBecause there's one 0, all I did was move the decimal point 1 to the left. That would be 56.7. So 567-56.7 = $510.3.
Now for the time. 10% of 45 is 4.5. So that would be 4 hours and 30 min. 45-4.5 = 40.5 (40 hours and 30 min).
He now gets paid $510.3 for working a 40.5 hour week. He gets paid $56.7 less than before, but works 4.5 hours less.
His new hourly rate is $15.40/hour, which is $2.80 more per hour than the old hourly rate, $12.60/hour. To calculate his old hourly rate, the question said he was earning $567 each week from working for 45 hours which required me to divide the money he was earning each week by the time he is working each week. So 567/45 is 12.6, meaning he earns $12.60/hour. To find his new hourly rate, I use his old weekly salary ($567/45 hours of work a week) and find 10% of $567 and 10% of the hours he works per week, which is 45 hours. I find 10% of $567 because his weekly earnings was going to be increased so I had to find 10% and add that amount to $567. I multiply 0.1 (which is 10%) by 567 which is 56.7. I add this to 567 which adds up to be 623.7, which is $623.70 because there are two decimal spots in money. Now to find the number of hours he works per week. Before, he worked 45 hours a week but the number of hours he works per week will reduce by 10% (0.1*45) which is 4.5. So I subtract this from 45 which means he works 40.5 hours (40 hours and 30 minutes) per week. His new weekly salary is $623.70/40.5 hours a weeks. To find how much money he makes per hour, I divide the money he earns from a week by the total amount of hours he works per week. 623.70/40.5 gives me the quotient 15.4, which, means he earns $15.40 per hour. To find how much more money he makes now, I subtract 12.60 from 15.40 which is 2.80, so he earns $2.80 more per hour now
ReplyDeleteFirst I reduced his hours by 10%. 45x0.1=4.5. 45-4.5=40.5. Then I found that 567x1.1=623.7 in order to find how much he would make after the increase. He makes $623.7 in 40.5 hours. I turned 40.5 into minutes because i work better with minutes than hours. 40x60=2400+30= 2430. 2430 mins. Then I divided 623.7 into 2430 to see how much he makes per minute. 623.7/2430=0.256666666666667. Then I multiplied it by 60 to find his hourly pay/ 0.256666666666667x60=15.40000000000002. Now he makes approximately $15.4 per hour. For the before it is simpler to find. Just divide 567 by 45. 567/45=12.6. He used to make $12.6 per hours. Then I did 15.4-12.6=2.8. Therefore he now makes $2.80 more than before.
ReplyDeleteten percent of 567 is 56.7 so if i add that to harrys sallary i get 623.7 then 10 percnt of his work is 270 subtract that then you get 2430 so his work hours is 40.5 hours a week and his salary is 623.7
ReplyDeleteSo to solve the problem all I did was divided 567 by 45 to get 12.6 as his hourly wage. Then I knew this was the answer to the question as he is earning 10 more and working 10 percent less meaning his hourly wage stays the same.
ReplyDeleteTo find what 10% of 45 and 567, I divided each into 10.
ReplyDelete45/10=4.5h
567/10=$56.7
Then I subtracted 10% of the original amount of hours and added 10% to the original amount of money.
45h-4h 30 min
567+56.7= $623.7
Harry Wirks would be paid $623.7 for working 40h and 30min a weak.
Ok new answer I accidentally added the 10% of and hour instead of take away so the actual answer would be 15.4 sorry
ReplyDeleteThe difference that I got between the two hourly pays was $2.8.
ReplyDeleteWhat I did was that I first wanted to find the hourly pay of his original hourly pay.
567 / 45 = 12.6
So originally he got paid $12.6/hour.
Then I looked for what was 10% of 567.
567 / 10 = 56.7
Then I added 56.7 to 567 to get the 10% that was increased.
567 + 56.7 = 623.7
Then I reduced 10% ofthe hours.
45 / 10 = 4.5
Then I subtracted that from 45.
45 - 4.5 = 40.5
Than I did looked for the hourly pay.
623.7 / 40.5 = 15.4
So the new pay was $15.4/hour.
Then since it was talking about the difference I knew that I had to subtract.
15.4 - 12.6 = 2.8
So the difference between the 2 hourly pays was $2.8.
The equation to represent the question asked is find the difference between
ReplyDelete567 x 0.10/ 45 x 0.10 and 567/45
The first part of the equation i needed to find 0.1 or 10% of 567 and 45. This is easily found by moving the decimal from nothing to a tenth, meaning you get 56.7 in increased payment and 4.5 hours of decrease work time.
This amounts to 673.7/40.5 which is payment to work hours. Solving this equation would give you the amount of money Henry Wirk makes per hour with his new salary. The answer is $15.40.
567/45 is how much Henry use to make per hour, which is $12.60.
So what is the difference between 15.4 and 12.6?
15.4-12.6=2.8
So the difference that he makes, new payment plan compared to old, is $2.80.
milette ben test
ReplyDeleteto solve this question I first found the amount he would be paid when the pay was raised by 10%, which would be 567 + 56.7= 623.70. Then, it states that the amount of hours he will be working is to be reduced by 10% of 45 hrs is 4.5 hours, and when I subtract 4.5 hrs from 45hrs I get 40.5 hrs. Now, I divide $623.70 by 40.5 hrs to get $15.40, which is a $2.80 increase from 12.60. I got 12.60 when first dividing to find his previous hourly rate by dividing 567 by 45hrs. So the answer is he gained $2.80 per hr.
ReplyDeleteTo solve this, first I found the 10% of both the numbers.
ReplyDelete$567 plus 10% is $623.70
40 hrs minus 10% is 40.5 hrs (OR 40 hrs, 30 mins)
So, he gets $623.70 per 40.5 hours. But that can be reduced, so if we divide both numbers by 40.5, you know that he gets $15.40 per hour.
