Math POTW #4 - Merry Thanksgiving!

Welcome back to the POTW! Great job last week. Please remember to msg me with your answers if your having issues posting comments to the blog. I encourage you to ask questions of your classmates' work too.

Last week, we did see that 12 white marbles would be added to the bag. The bag started with 16 marbles and ended up with a total of 28 marbles. Therefore, 28-16 = 12 white marbles. If you obtained a different answer can you support how or why?

The new POTW for week #4 is:

  1. In my opinion, I would say you would send 12 small airplanes to land while the 12 large planes depart. Then after the large planes leave, you could have 14 large planes land while the 14 small planes depart on runway B. Now lets say that a large plane=1.5 and a small one=1, this would mean that we would be able to land 33 small planes or 22 large planes.

  2. i would say to use runway A to land all the large planes, and B to depart the small planes, not only does this cause more passengers to arrive on time, but there are more small planes that have to depart which means that there will be more large planes arriving, after you would send the larger aircrafts to depart and the smaller aircrafts to arrive

    1. Use numbers such as the time it would take to help explain.

  3. I think that first you have to land 12 small airplanes to quickly get rid of all of them, by yousing the small runway, but at the same time have the 12 big airplanes departing, then take the remaining small airplanes and take both off one after another, so first one airplane departs and then the other

  4. I think you would have to first land every single small plane at runway B because large planes can't go to B. At the same time you would have the large planes depart at A. You would then start landing the large airplanes at runway A while B is still going until 1 hour is up. This will make it so (Assuming 1 small plane hold 1 person (So realistic) you can have[(12x1.5)+(12x1.5)+(6x1.5)=45] 45 people arrive from large planes and [(14x1)+(14x1)+(2x1)=30] 30 from small planes.

  5. I think that it would be best to first let every small plane depart using runway B since the larger planes cant use it. Then at the same time, let the larger planes arrive using runway A.
    14 small = 14 x 2 = 28 (in 28 min)
    12 large = 12 x 2 = 24 (in 24 min)
But those are both at the same time so it would be all in about 28 min.

    For example:
If one small plane held 2 people and one large plane holds 3 (2 x 1.5).
    3 x 12 = 36 so 36 people
    2 x 14 = 28 so 28 people
28+36= 64 so 64 people would have been able to use it

    1. I like how you explained your thinking with numbers. Do you think it has to be in exactly 30 minutes?

  6. Most students got CLOSE to the correct answer. However, the accurate answer is that the airport may allow 18 large planes and 12 small planes to land. If you obtained a different answer, can you see why? Try your work again. Hint: there can be 30 plane arrivals in the one-hour span, therefore answers that do not equal 30 total planes cannot be correct.
