Math POTW #5

Good job again last week students. Please continue to try and send responses, despite the troubleshooting concerns we are currently undergoing. I don't think anyone got last week's POTW correct, did you? Please check the correct answer in last week's question/answer thread.

Please find and answer the latest POTW below.

  1. $9.50-$6.00=$3.50, Pita=$3.50
    $6.00-$4.70=$1.30, Chips=$1.30
    $4.70-$3.50=$1.20, Water=$1.20

    $3.50×3=$10.50, Three Pita
    $1.30×2=$2.60, Two Chips
    $1.20×1=$1.20, One Bottled Water
    $10.50+$2.60+$1.20=$14.30

Cy will need to pay $14.30

    1. first I had to find the cost of one pita. because the second deal was just one pita more than the first, I subtracted $6.00 from $9.50 to get $3.50. therefore the cost of one pita is $3.50.
next, I found the cost of chips by subtracting the third deal from the first as that would eliminate the pita and the water. $6.00 - $4.70=$1.30 so a bag of chips cost $1.30. lastly I found the cost of the water by subtracting the pita's price from the third deal as that one only consisted of a pita and water. $4.70 - $3.50 = $1.20 which Is the cost of water.

to find how much lunch cost for cy, I added the price of 3 pitas, 2 bags of chips and 1 bottled water.
      (3.50 x 3) + (1.30 x 2) + 1.20 = $14.30.
      so, cy's lunch cost $14.30

  2. first i had to find the cost of the pita, i noticed that the first choice was just one pita less than the second one so the 2nd choice subtract 1rst choice would give me the price of pita, 9.50-6.00=3.50, 3.50 was just the pita.then i chose to find the cost of the water, since the 3rd choice was just 1 pita plus 1 water, i could subtract the pita price from the 3rd options cost, 4.70-3.50=1.20, that was the cost of water. Since i knew the price of 2 of the items, i could find the last one as well. this was because the first option was just all 3, so i subtracted 4.70 which was pita+water from 6.00 and i got 1.30. that was the chips. Now that i knew all 3 of the prices all i had to do is apply then. The equations goes like this: 3.50x3+1.30x2+1.20. this equaled 14.30, so Cy's food costs 14.30

"It says that for a pits, bag of chips and water is $6, and one more pita would make the total $9.50. Using this information, I can find out the price of one pita by subtracting 6 from 9.50. $9.50-$6=$3.50. One pita is $3.50. Next, it tells me that a pita and a bottle of water and a pita is $4.70. To find the price of the water, I do $4.70-$3.50=$1.20. One bottle of water is $1.20. To find the cost of a bag of chips, I can do $6.00-$3.50-$1.20=$1.30. One bag of chips is $1.30. Cy's purchase adds up to: ($3.50x3)+($1.30x2)+$1.20=$10.50+$2.60+$1.20=$10.50+$3.80=$14.30
Cy Dorder will need to pay $14.30 for his lunch."

"First, I subtracted 6 from 9.50 to find the price of pita:
    9.50 - 6 = 3.50
Next, I subtracted $3.50 from $4.70 to find the price of bottled water:
    4.70 - 3.50 = 1.20
Next, I multiplied 3.50 by 2 to find the price of two pitas, and added that to 1.20:
    3.50 x 2 = 7 + 1.20 = 8.20
I subtracted this from 9.50 to find the price of chips:
    9.50 - 8.20 = 1.30
    Next, I multiplied 3.50 by 3 and 1.20 by 2:
    3.50 x 3 = 10.50 1.30 x 2 = 2.60
To find the answer, I added both of these numbers to 1.20:
    10.50 + 2.60 + 1.20 = 14.30
    Therefore Cy spent $14.30."

  5. Pita + Chips + Water = $6.00
    Pita + Pita + Chips + Water = $9.50
    $9.50 - $6.00 = $3.50
    Pita: $3.50

    Pita + Water = $4.70
    $4.70 - $3.50 = $1.20
    Water: $1.20

    Pita + Water + Chips = $6.00
    Pita + Water = $4.70
    $6.00 - $4.70 = $1.30
    Chips: $1.30

    ($3.50 x 3) + ($1.30 x 2) + $1.20 = $14.30

Cy spends $14.30 on his lunch.

  6. Cy will need to pay 14.30 dollars.
I got my answers by using the clues given and slowly using the results from previous clues to get the next answer. First of all, the first two clues can give me the cost of the pita which is 3.50. The totals of the first 2 clues are 9.50 and 6 and the only difference between the two is an extra pita so we can subtract 9.50 by 6 to get the cost of the pita which is 3.50. Now to get the price of the bottled water, we can use the third clue clue which states that a bottled water and pita together costs 4.70. Since we know the price of the pita, we can subtract 4.70 by 3.50 to get the price of the bottled water which is 1.20. Finally, to get the price of the potato chips, all we need to do is add the price of the bottled water and pita and subtract the sum by 6 which is the cost of the chips as 6 dollars is the price of the 3 items together so 6-(3.50+1.20)=1.30. There fore the pita costs 3.50, the bottled water costs 1.20 and the chips cost 1.30. To answer the question we must multiply the amount Cy bought for each item and multiply by its cost accordingly and then adding the results up so (3*3.50)+(2*1.30)+(1*1.20)=14.30. Therefore Cy paid a total of 14 dollars and 30 cents.

  7. To answer this question, you need to first find the cost of one of each food.

The question states that one pita, one bag of chips, and one water bottle costs $6.00 and for 2 pitas, one bag of chips and one water bottle you have to pay $9.50. The only thing different between these two orders is that there is one more pita, which means the difference will be the cost of one pita.

    9.50-6.00= 3.50 so one pita costs $3.50

It also says that a pita and a bottled water cost $4.70. 4.70-3.50= 1.20. So one bottled water is $1.20.

Going back to the first statement of buying one pita, one bag of chips and one water bottle for $6.00, I know that together, one pita and one water bottle are 4.70, so the difference between 4.70 and 6.00 would be the price of one bag of chips. 6.00-4.70= 1.30. So a bag of chips is $1.30

Finally, all that is left to do is add up the prices of Cy’s order.
    3.50+3.50+3.50+1.30+1.30+1.20= $14.30 So Cy’s lunch will cost $14.30
