POTW #16 - Pay Up

  1. I worked backwards to solve this problem.
Chai received $900 and Bogdan received 1/4 of the money right before which is $300 because 1/4 of 1200 is 300 and 1200-300=900 (Chai's amount). Then we can add $1200 with $900 to get $2100. Alex received 1/5 of the money before so with some trial and error, we find out that Alex received $500+$525=$1025. I know this because $2625/5=$525 and $2625-$525=$2100 (the previous amount as he received it before Bogdan and Chai). Therefore the total amount given or original sum is $900 (Chai)+$1200 (Bogdan)+$1025 (Alex)=$3125 and Bogdan received the most money with $1200.

    1. I like your detailed explanation Leo. "Working backwards" is a great strategy for logic(ish) problems like this. Were there any other strategies you used, or could have used?

    2. I think I know now, it is 800+300 which is 1100 not 1200 so 900+1100=2000. Alex received 1/5 of 2500 or 2000+500 (his amount) which is 500 and 500+500 is 1000. Therefore 900, 1100 and 1000 are the sums.

  2. To find the answer I first found how much 1/4+1/5 together was, this was 9/20, 9/20 is equal to 45/100 or 45%. this means that 900+500+800 is equal to the other half or 55%, 900+500+800=2200. If we divide 2200 by 11, we should get 5% or 200. 200x9= 1800, 1800+2200=4000, the original sum was 4000. Now to find the person who got the most, we can use logic(kind of), first lets look at the ones with fractions, Bogdan recieves more money and a higher percentage, so he has more, now comparing that to Chai, There is a $100 difference but borgdan has 25% of 4000 as well, which means he has $1000+800, twice chai's money, therefore Borgdan has the most money.

  3. 5/20,4/20,11/20
11/20 or 900 is 55% of the money left
    5% is 81.8181812
    that x 5 is alex's
    and that x 4 is bogan's
    which the results total to:
Bogan with the most at 1'127.27272727
    alex second with 909.0909091
    and Chia last with 900

  4. To make it easier, I'll start from the bottom (now we're here)
It says Chai got $900. It also said that the $900 is the remaining. Since Bogdan got $800 plus 1/4 of the remaining, it means Chai got 3/4 of the remaining. I then divide 900 by 3, getting 300, meaning Bogdan got $800 plus $300, so he got $1200 (4/4). Alex got $500 plus 1/5 of what was left over (1/5 of $1200+$900[2100]). I then divide 2100 by 4, getting 525, 1/5. I then add 525 and 500, showing that Alex got $1025.
In order from least to greatest, Chai got $900, Alex got $1025, and Bogdan got $1200 (the most).
In total, the 3 children had a pool of 3125.

  5. I do not think anyone got this one correct. Alex actually received $1000, Bogden got $1100, and Chai got $900. The total was thus $3000. Does anyone see how or why this is the correct answer? And/or why your answer was incorrect?
