POTW #20 - The Ballots are IN!

Enjoy the latest Math Problem of the week below. Please see last week's reply section for the correct answer to POTW #19.

  1. Willie 60%
    Shirley 40%
    Willie won by 24 votes and had 20% more, so that means 24=20%
    24x5=120
    120 people voted

  2. I know that 60% is 24, therefore 4 is 10% (24/6=4). 4x4 equals 40% which equals 16. Therefore, Shirley Cann had 16 votes.

  3. Because the votes were 60% to 40%, and willie won by 24, therefore Shirley Cann received 48 (24x2), therefore 72 people voted for Willie (48+24), and 120 people voted in total (72+48). 120 people voted.

  4. If 24 votes=60% of the votes
    24 votes/6=10%
    4 votes x 10= 10% x 10
    40 votes = 100%

    There were a total of 40 votes in this election

  5. Since 24 of the votes was 20%
    24/2=12
    12 is equal to 10% of the votes. Therefore 12x10=120 so 120 people voted.

  6. If Willie got 60% then Shirley got 40% so 60 - 40 = 20%. Since Willie also got 24 more votes, then 24 = 20%. Since 100/20 = 5, then 5 x 24 = 120.
    Therefore, 120 people voted.

  7. Willie: 60%
    100-60=40
    Shirley:40%
    60-40=20%Willie won by 24 votes
    24 votes=20%
    100 divided by 20=5
    24 x 5=120 votes
    120 people voted in total

  8. Willie Makeit received 60% and Shirley Cann received 40%. Therefore, Willie won over Shirley by 20%.

    He also won over her by 24 votes. Therefore, 20% is equivalent to 24. 20% * 5 is 100%, so 24 * 5 must be the number of voters.

    24 * 5 = 120.

    120 people in total voted for a position on the city council.

  9. If Willie got 60% and Shirley 40% then the difference in votes is 20% or 24. If 20% x 5 is 100% then 24 x 5 is 120 or the amount of voters

  10. Suren wrote: There were 120 voters. I figured this out by examining the given numbers. I learned that the winner Willie had 60% of the votes and won by 24. Since his opponent won 40%, or the rest, 24 would be 20%. That is because Willie had 60%, and his opponent had 40%. Willie had 20 % more votes, and won by 24. To get one hundred percent I would multiply 20 by 5, so I multiplied 24 by 5 which was 120. There were 120 voters.

  11. Won by 24= 60-40 =20. So 20%=24 votes

    60 divided by 20= 3. 40 divided by 20= 2

    3+2=5

    5x24=120

    So there were 120 voters

  12. Willie won by 20% or 24 votes. in order to find 5% i divide 20 by 4 and so i do the same to 24 getting 6. then i multiply 6 by 20 as 5% x 20 is 100. 6x20 is 120. Therefore there are 120 voters

  13. I'm not sure what happened because I already submitted mine but I got the same answer as everybody else 120 voters in total because 20% is 24 votes as that is the difference between the Shirley and Willie's votes. 24 * 5 = 120.
