POTW #8 - Patterns in the GPS

Hello again, it was great to see such high levels are participation to last week's POTW. But, we still are encouraging you to comment to and reply to your peers' posts. The answers have been posted to the latest replies to the POTW #7 thread. Please check and review your work to see if you "got it".

Also, as many of you have noticed, Ms. Sebamaalai has posted some awesome language-related challenges. Please continue to try your hand at those as well.

Without further ado, POTW #8 is below:

  1. I found a pattern where the R is going up by 3 every row. I divided 2014 by 3 is 671.333.... Then I tried 2013 divided by 3 and got 671. Therefore, 2014 is one letter in front or back as the pattern goes one back and then one front. I found out that all odd numbers go in front and 671 is an odd number so it is after 2013 or S. Therefore, the number 2014 is on row 671 S.

    1. Correction:
I found a pattern where the R column is going up by 3 every row. I divided 2014 by 3 which is 671.333 which didn't work. Then I tried 2013 divided by 3 and got 671 which means 2013 is in the 671st row. Therefore, 2014 is one letter in front or back as the pattern goes one 3 numbers in front and then 3 numbers to the back of the R column. I found out that all odd numbered rows go in front and 671 is an odd number so it is after 2013 or S or T. I found out that all S's were odd numbers and 2013 is odd so 2013 is in the S meaning 2014 is in the T. Therefore 2014 is in the 671st row, T column.

  2. It should be on row 71 T. I got this because the pattern is 1,2,3, go to next row and go 4,5,6 on the other side and keep going down. So, each row increases the number by 3. To get my answer I first took the number we want to find (2014) and subtracted the number 19 because we already reached that number. 2014-19=1995, I then took the difference and divided it by three ti see how many more whole rows it can fit into. It divided perfectly into 65 meaning there are 65 more rows. 6+65=71, 2014 is located on row 71. To find the place it is in, I knew because 1995 split perfectly into 3's the number is on one of the ends just like the 19. 65 is an odd number so the side would change making it on row 71, T.

    1. 1995/3=665, I think you forgot a 6 so 665+6 not 65 +6

    2. Oh I wrote 1995/3=65...

  3. The pattern is to have three on each row in rows RST and then on RQP

Since the pattern left off at 19, I subtracted 19 from 2014 since it was the number that I was trying to place. I got 1995. Since there are three on each row, I decided to divide 1995 by 3 which got me 665.
Since the last place was on row 6, I added 6 + 665 and I got 671. Which means 2014 would be on row 671. 671 is an odd number and all the odd numbers are with RST so I knew that it would be in one of those. Then I divided 2014 by 3 and got 671.333333. I checked the numbers they gave that were in RST and found that all that were in T, when divided by 3. they all ended in a .3333 so I realized that T must be right so the placement of 2014 found be 671 T.

  4. First of all, I found the patterns. In every row, there were 3 numbers. Now, I want to find the number of rows needed to get to 2014. Since the pattern has already gotten to 19, I can do 2014-19=1995. Then I can divide 1995/3=665. So there would be 665 rows more. Since there are already 6 rows to hold 19, I add 6+665=671. I know that the even numbered rows’ numbers are all on the left side. 671 is an odd number so it is on the right side. Since 1995 divided by 3 was perfectly 665, the placement of 2014 should be row 671, T

  5. I first found the pattern of each column.

P: Start at 4 and add 3 each time
Q: Start at 3 and add 3 each time
R: Start at 2 and add 3 each time
S: Start at 3 and add 3 each time
T: Start at 4 and add 3 each time

So I tried each of the possibilities
    (2014-4)÷3=670
    2014÷3=671.333333...
    (2014-2)÷3=670.666666...
Only the patterns beginning with 4 can possibly reach 2014
This means that on row #670 in column P or T the number would be 2014

  6. first i found that they were all going up by 3 but the only difference was that there started at different numbers P Q R S T
    4 3 2 3 4
to find out the place of 2014 i subtracted the starting numbers from 2014 and divided them by 3 and got this P= 2014-4= 2010 divided by 3= 670 so 2014 comes up at column P row 670 and is also one column T row 670

  7. Good job to all, but especially Neha, Serena, and Leo for the correct response of 671 T (I think Dan got it correct too, but didn't record his corrected answer).

Below is an explanation for how you may solve it:
Each row contains a multiple of three in either column Q or column S. Even
multiples of three are in column Q and odd multiples of three are in column S.
To determine the row number, take the multiple of three and divide it by 3.
The outer numbers in column P or column T have a remainder 1 when divided
by 3. Numbers that are even and have a remainder 1 when divided by 3 are in
column T. Numbers that are odd and have a remainder 1 when divided by 3
are in column P. If the largest number in a row is even, it is in column T. If
the largest number in a row is odd, it is in column P.
Every number in column R has a remainder 2 when divided by 3.
When 2014 is divided by 3, there is a quotient of 671 and a remainder 1. So
2014 is in column P or T but since 2014 is even, it is in column T. The 671st
multiple of 3, 2013, is in row 671, in column S, to the left of 2014. In fact, row
    671 will contain 2012 in column R; 2013, the 671st multiple of 3, in column S;
    and 2014 in column T.
Therefore, the number 2014 is located in row 671, column T.

  8. To answer the question i noticed that the letter R started at 2 and had 3 added to it each time, so to find 2014, i first pretended that the 2 was a 3, so i could subtract 1 from it afterwards. Then i found 2014 divided by 3 which was 671, with a remainder of 1. then i counted 2(1 from the remainder and one from when i pretended 2 was 3) back from 2014 and got 2012. Then i counted 2 forward from 2012 and got T. Then i found the row by using the number which was the quotient of 2014 divided by 3, 671.So the answer is 671 T

  9. P: Start at 4 and add 3 each time
Q: Start at 3 and add 3 each time
R: Start at 2 and add 3 each time
S: Start at 3 and add 3 each time
T: Start at 4 and add 3 each time

This means that on row 671 T

  10. R started at 2 and increased by 3 each time so to find 2014, I made 2=3, 2014/3=671 R1. 2014-2= 2012
    2 forwword from 2012=T
    Since 2014/2=671, Ans=671 T
